Grand Champion Veggie Burgers

I'm away this week (check the details!) but I wanted to leave you with at least one Kick Ass recipe to enjoy while I'm gone! I've asked my bestie Rebecca to write a guest post for me, to talk about our new FAVOURITE vegan burger recipe from oh she glows that we are just totally obsessed with. 


I am not a blogger, but I am a blogger-BFF, so when Laura asked me to write a guest post I was more than happy to oblige. Especially since it means sharing this particular recipe.

I am a fairly new vegetarian (well, really pescatarian) and my favourite part so far has been trying amazing recipes from vegetarian and vegan blogs and cookbooks that I never would have tried before. 

One of the best blogs that I go to all the time is Oh She Glows, and that site is the source of the best burgers of all time. Not the best veggie burgers, the hands down, grand champion best burgers ever.


I’ve made them a couple bazillion times at this point, and I have come up with my favourite version now which really doesn’t stray too far from the original recipe. I didn’t have carrots the first time I made them so I subbed in beets and loved that. I also added 1/3 cup of coarsely chopped almonds and used soy sauce rather than tamari.

To those who read this and think it will take too long or are not sure if they like veggie burgers: I promise, you will not regret making these. 

Oh She Glows "Grand Champion" Veggie Burgers (makes 8 burgers)

Notes on Prep:

  • Use a food processor for everything that needs chopping/blending/processing.
  • I chose beets and used red onions.
  • Select your preferred cooking method before you start!
  • I had my burger with shredded cheese, avocado and ketchup. YUMYUMYUM!


  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1 large garlic clove, minced
  • Flax eggs: 2.5 tbsp ground flax + 1/2 cup warm water, mixed in bowl
  • 1 cup oats, processed into flour
  • 1.5 cups bread crumbs
  • 1 cup grated carrots OR beets
  • 1 cup cooked black beans, rinsed and roughly pureed or mashed
  • Heaping 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley (or fresh herb of choice)
  • 1/3 cup blanched almonds, chopped 
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1.5 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • Fine grain sea salt and black pepper, to taste (I used about 1/2 tsp salt or a bit more)


1) Preheat oven to 350F (only if baking - see step 4). In a large skillet, sauté onions and garlic in 1/2 tbsp oil. Mix your flax egg together in a small bowl and set aside for at least 10 mins while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.

2) Place all ingredients (except spices and salt) into a large mixing bowl and stir very well. Now, add seasonings and salt to taste.

3) With slightly wet hands, shape dough into patties. Pack dough tightly as this will help it stick together. I made 8 medium patties.

4) Cooking methods: You can fry the burgers in a bit of oil on a skillet over medium heat for about 5 minutes on each side. If baking in the oven, bake for 25-30 mins (15-17 minutes on each side) at 350F, until golden and crisp. For the BBQpre-bake the burgers for about 15 minutes in oven before placing on a pre-heated grill until golden and crisp on each side. Preferred method of cooking was frying in the skillet!!

A final note! These Burgers freeze up really well so make a whole batch and then store them for later!
