Friday Wine Down

Happy Friday!!!!

Guys, the Wine Down is taking a bit of a different turn this week. Normally I like to review three or four things I've been up to, and then talk about what I plan on drinking for the weekend.

BUT, since tomorrow is CANADA DAY, I thought I would talk about a few things I LOVE about my country (and then tell you what I'm drinking).

Canada turns 150 years old tomorrow, so the celebrations are going to be big, big, BIG! Get ready to see our pretty Prime Minister out in all his glory (and check his socks, which are always a tribute to whatever he's out doing), as well as 33 million Red and White clad Canadians, politely offering doughnuts and beer to anyone who looks like they might be running low.

As for me, I'll be up at my cottage ("Rock, Bought'em") celebrating with my family! Expect lots of instastories!

OK lets Wine Down and talk about why Canada is so freaking great!

1) Dayyyyyum Canada, You FIIIIIIIIIIIIINE

Guys, not to brag, but Canada is a sexy country. From Newfoundland to BC, we're rocking mountains, prairies, oceans, more fresh water lakes than ANY OTHER COUNTRY (combined!), ice fields, granite boulders rising through enormous forests, incredible water falls and rivers.

I've had the chance to see so much natural beauty in this country, and I feel so damn lucky every time I hop in my canoe up north, or ski the glaciers in Whistler, or wander the sea side in Nova Scotia, or gaze out at the horseshoe of Niagara Falls.

It's magical.

2) It's a laugh a minute!

Jim Carrey, Mike Meyers, Seth Rogen, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, Phil Hartman, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Norm Macdonald, Russle Peters, Leslie Neilson, Lorne Michaels, Will Arnett, Samantha Bee...

Do I really need to go on?

2b) Other than comedians, our other top export? Sexy Ryans!

3) Lulu Lemon

I'm wearing them right now. I'm comfortable, AND my butt looks good!

You're welcome!

4) Poutine

We have to thank French Canadians for this incredible dish. French fries with cheese curds and gravy? AMAZING!

Fast food restaurants have been trying to get in on this for the past few years, but the best poutines are still purchased out of fry trucks, or in its home province.

There's so many variations! You can get it with any number of toppings, sauces and meats (I've even had it with rabbit!); while pulled pork poutine is my favourite, there's something you have to appreciate about the classic dish.

Sorry about the cholesterol, but I like to think it's worth it... and speaking of

5) Effective, Safe, Universal Healthcare

So, more seriously, last year my Dad had to have surgery. MAJOR surgery

He had what's called a "whipple" where they basically remove your gall bladder, part of your stomach, duodenum, half your pancreas, part of your lower intestine, and then sew you back together.

He was on the table for 8 hours. We were understandably upset and it was a tense few hours. But you know what we weren't? Worried for his safety and bankrupt.

I am so grateful to live in a country where we didn't need to make the choice between bankruptcy, or having my Dad. I'm even more grateful that we live in a country where our doctors were able to give him top of the line medical treatment and perform this surgery safely.

6) The People

People are people, no matter where you live there are weird ones and rude ones and happy ones and selfless ones.

But Canadians? Yes, we really are as polite as is joked. We are FIERCELY proud of our country, so please don't bad mouth it.

We like to laugh (as mentioned), and complain about the service at Tim Horton's even as we stop in for the second time that day.

We like to get outside. We like to have a beer (or six) with friends. Heck, we like to have beer with strangers! We live for the short patio season, and many of us would admit to drinking outside in the dead of winter under a propane burner.

We actually care about the winter Olympics, MORE than the summer Olympics. Winter is our time to shine and it's a non stop party up here whenever we win the gold (especially in Hockey)

We like to learn new things about new places and new people. We ABSOLUTELY say "Eh" and "A-boot", but we don't really recognize that until you point it out.

We use the smiling poop emoji more than any other emoji. And doesn't that really say it all?

What I'm Drinking

As it's our national holiday, I'll probably be drinking quite a few things. But I want to represent 2 Canadian drinks today, of which I am particularly proud.

I might be a BIT biased because I know the folks at this northern Ontario brewery, but Lone Pine is basically the only beer I drink now! Patriotic and delicious, it's got a hoppy flavour (but isn't overwhelming) and makes for a perfect fun-in-the-sun beer!

Fun fact! Did you know that Crown Royal Whisky was named THE WORLD'S BEST WHISKY in 2016? And you thought all we knew was Hockey and Maple Syrup!

OK! That's all I have to say about my big beautiful country!!!! So here`s my question for you: Do you have a Canada story? Whether you're from here or have visited or just think our Prime Minister is dreamy (he is though) I'd love to hear about it in the comments below!!!

Have a great weekend, and Happy Canada Day!

xxox, Laura
