Let's Go To the Ex! (oh baby)

"Come and celebrate Toronto and do anything you want to at the Ex!"

65 years ago, my Grandparents met at the Canadian National Exhibition. On Cadet day in 1949, my grandfather met my grandmother and decided he wanted to take her on one of the rides.

He's always been such a ladies man... of course we found out years later she had met him 2 weeks earlier under unfavourable circumstances and HATED him... but he's a charmer and a looker so she agreed to go on the ride with him. I don't think he remembered their previous encounter.

My grandfather grew up incredibly poor, so he went over to his buddy and asked him to loan him some money so he could take my grandmother on the ride. Unfortunately, his buddy was all out of cash, but "don't worry Doug! I just spotted my sister, she'll loan me some!"

And that's the story of how my grandmother ended up unknowingly loaning my grandfather money, and paid for their first carnival ride at the CNE.

Last Year's Anniversary Photo Shoot,
64 years together, 60 years married,
4 Children and 9 Grandchildren later.

They've been married 61 wonderful years, and the CNE has become a special place for my family. This year, Kris and I hopped on the train and headed down to The Ex for a night of games, ride and greasy food for this fabulous Toronto Tradition.

We saw/did lots of wonderful things, witnessed QUITE a few couples doing engagement photo shoots, indulged in some not-so-good-for-us poutine, and capped the night off watching fireworks and then went to the beer tent for a night cap!

If you haven't been down to the CNE yet this year, make sure to go! It all wraps up labour day weekend.

Don't forget to try some of the weird food building stuff.. Last year's Cronut was good, but this year's "Thanksgiving Waffles", "Chocolate Fried Chicken", "Spicy Peanut Butter Sriracha Balls" and the "Fun-ana" (That's a Banana, dipped in corn dog batter and deep fried) are some SOLID weird-carnival foods you should try!
